Eastern Long Neck Turtle
- Found in eastern Australia from just south of Rockhampton in Queensland to Victoria
- Also known as the Eastern Snake Neck Turtle
- Carnivorous species, occasionally eats fish
- Very terrestrial, spends many months on land
- A cold climate turtle, it is active and feeding in water at temperatures of 12 degrees Celsius
- Grow to a shell length of 20-30 cm, and can easily live up to 100 years old or more
- The Eastern snake necked turtle emits a unpleasant offensive smelling fluid when handled, or when it wishes to frighten off predators. This fluid comes from “musk glands”. It also retracts its head by a sideways movement, tucking its head and neck in sideways under its shell (shown above)
