Amazon Horned Frog

  • Found in the leaf litter of the Amazons
  • Can grow up to 8 inches in length and can cover a good sized tea saucer, they become this girthy by being generally indiscriminate about what they eat
  • Ambush predators, they dig themselves into the leaf litter so that only a small part of their head is clear and wait. Anything smaller than them that happens to walk by is eaten. The frog leaps out and swallows the prey whole, grabbing it with it’s sharp teeth
  • They are aggressively territorial and veracious. Their excessive appetite and large mouth have given them the nickname “Pac-Man Frog”
  • Some Amazon villagers wear high leather boots called botas escuerzas to repel attacks by the highly territorial Amazon horned frog.
  • Scientist are unsure what purpose the horns serve, but most speculate that they are to help with camouflage
